<Yesterday    Tomorrow>

Today God says:
 "The gates of hell will not prevail against My Church".

He promises me:
  "Upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it". (Matt. 16:18)

My response to the word:
  The Church of Jesus Christ is firmly founded on the solid rock of God's living Word - Jesus Christ. He is the chief cornerstone. He has defeated the devil, "having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it". The Father has given Jesus all authority in heaven and in earth, and He has delegated that authority to His church. As a member of Christ's church, the gates of hell shall not prevail against me.

My prayer:
  Father, thank you for giving me membership in your family - the Church of Jesus Christ. Thank you, also, for protecting your Church throughout the centuries and for your promise that the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Today's scriptures:
 "Jesus said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. So wherever you go, make disciples of all nations: Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". (Matt. 28:18,19 GW) "God has put everything under the control of Christ. He has made Christ the head of everything for the good of the church". (Eph. 1:22 GW) "You are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself is the cornerstone". (Eph. 2:20 GW) "He stripped the rulers and authorities of their power and made a public spectacle of them as he celebrated his victory in Christ". (Col. 2:15 GW)

Quote for today:
The great criticism of the Church today is that no one wants to persecute it; because there is nothing very much to persecute it about. (George Macleod)

On this day:
On 25th May 735, the Venerable Bede died aged 62 years. Born in Northumberland, he became a monk in Jarrow and devoted his whole life to God. Just before his death he finished translating the Gospel of John into English. His work, Ecclesiastical History of the English People tells the wonderful stories of saints and preachers. He is thought to be the first person to draw up a calendar of the Christian year in England.
On 25th May 1868, Billy Bray died aged 73 years. An alcoholic miner, he found the Lord when he was aged 29. He shouted his way round Cornwall, England calling people to repent, building chapels and looking after orphans. His favourite saying was "Glory". His biography by F.W. Bourne sold more than half a million copies. Charles Spurgeon wrote a book entitled Eccentric Preachers, and included Billy Bray.
